Appendant Masonic Bodies in Nicaragua
The Scottish Rite and York Rite are present in Nicaragua, concentrated in Managua. The Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for Nicaragua is a sovereign national body, following the Latin American pattern of independent national Supreme Councils rather than affiliation with the US Northern or Southern Jurisdictions. Scottish Rite Valleys are active primarily in Managua, the capital city and the center of Nicaraguan Masonic life.
York Rite bodies — Royal Arch Chapters, Cryptic Councils, and Knights Templar Commanderies — are active in Nicaragua, principally in Managua. Their presence reflects the arrival of multiple Masonic degrees alongside the Blue Lodge tradition in the late nineteenth century.
Shriners International is present in Nicaragua through the Anezeh Shrine Temple, based in Houston and covering Mexico and Central America. Nicaraguan Shriners support the Shriners Children's hospital network; the nearest Shriners Children's facility for the region is in Mexico City.
Allied bodies including the Order of the Eastern Star are active in Nicaragua's lodge communities. Nicaragua is a member of COMACA (Central American Masonic Confederation), which coordinates Masonic relations across the isthmus. Given the recognition status notes above (the grand lodge does not appear on the current UGLE recognized list), Masons should verify their home grand lodge's current position on Nicaragua before participating in lodge or appendant body activities in this jurisdiction.
